Jimmy Garoppolo offseason split likely with 49ers, Kyle Shanahan says.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- For more than five years -- through injuries, trade attempts and much more -- the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo have always found their way back to each other.
But as San Francisco heads into yet another offseason filled with quarterback uncertainty, coach Kyle Shanahan made it clear Wednesday that Garoppolo and the Niners are finally going to go their separate ways.
Asked whether there was any scenario in which he could see Garoppolo returning to San Francisco in 2023, Shanahan did not mince words.
"No, I don't see any scenario of that," Shanahan said.
Unlike last year, when Garoppolo was still under contract and the Niners attempted to trade him, they have no such agency this time around. Garoppolo is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in March, and the 49ers cannot use a tag to retain his rights.
Shanahan and the Niners therefore will move forward with Brock Purdy and Trey Lance as their two quarterbacks under contract, something Shanahan said Wednesday that he would be content with going into next season.
The first order of business for Purdy is getting the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow taken care of. Purdy had further imaging done on the elbow Tuesday afternoon and although no decision has been made yet on whether he will have a reconstruction (Tommy John surgery) or repair (InternalBrace procedure), general manager John Lynch indicated that things were trending in the direction of the latter.
A repair would be good news because it would mean a shorter recovery for Purdy that could have him back on the field near the start of training camp at the end of July or early August.
"The positive bit of news is that it seems to be consistent that the right approach is that one that takes about that six-month point," Lynch said. "Now everybody will also say you never know until you get in there. Every surgeon will tell you that on every surgery. You always like getting in to see exactly ... . They're continuing to work through that process, but we seem encouraged by the prognosis that that's kind of where it's at."
If Purdy opts for the surgical repair augmented with an InternalBrace to help reinforce the ligament as it heals, he could actually begin his rehab as soon as three months after the procedure with full clearance at the six-month mark.
"That was the coolest thing for me to hear about that," Shanahan said. "Once three months is over, they start the rehab, just building the arm back slowly, and by six months it's filled back."
Lance said Tuesday that he should be out of the walking boot for his surgically repaired right ankle by the end of this week, with the chance to be cleared in time for organized team activities in May.
Shanahan indicated Wednesday that that timeline is possible, although Lance might not do as much in the parts of the offseason program before OTAs start.
"It sounds like it'll be pretty close around Phase 1, Phase 2," Shanahan said. "Hopefully we'll go to ease him into drill work and things like that and by OTAs he will be able to go."
As for how the quarterback situation will shake out, Shanahan said Wednesday that he hasn't given it much thought yet, noting that there's not much to discuss right now because only Lance figures to be available for any on-field work before training camp.
Shanahan did acknowledge that the Niners will need to add another quarterback in some way, but he didn't sound as if he and the 49ers will go hunting for a big name at the position.
"I know we have two starters on our team right now that I believe we can win with," Shanahan said. "So when you have that situation, you're not that eager to go looking around."
Among the other takeaways from Shanahan and Lynch at Wednesday's end-of-season news conference:
  • Despite persistent rumors that he could be leaving for television or another job, Lynch said he intends to remain in his role in San Francisco. "I plan on being here," Lynch said. "I really do. I'm committed to doing this and I'm having a great time doing it and committed to finding a way to get a little bit better."
  • When left tackle Trent Williams, 34, spoke Tuesday, he didn't definitively close the door on retiring this offseason. But Shanahan believes that was more the result of Williams being tired at the end of a long season than a realistic chance he could actually call it quits. "I didn't read his words as that's a big thing for him," Shanahan said. "I know Trent loves football. I know it's very hard at his age, but in any situation, to do what you do for that long and come up short. But I'd be surprised if Trent retired in a few weeks."
  • On a looming contract extension for defensive end Nick Bosa, Lynch indicated it will play out similar to the way things did with players such as linebacker Fred Warner, receiver Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle, meaning a deal might not get done until closer to the start of training camp. "I think we have a real good track record," Lynch said. "You looked the last five years ... of getting our players done. But it takes time, it takes patience, it takes persistence, and we'll have that on our side."

I think the Bucs will go the tanking route. Maybe go with Trask or a rookie 3rd/4th rounder. Alot of their good players are older and they will lose some others to free agency.

Rogers--- Jets
Texans---- Bryce Young ( they are stupid enough to do that)
Carolina: Derek Carr
Raiders: Garroppolo
Seahawks: Stroud
Colts: No one hopefully unless they can get Levis in the 3rd round. And top prospects fall that far. Last year, all the mocks had Malik Willis being a top 12 pick. Fell to the 3rd round
Bears: Levis or 1 of the 3 qbs. They are quietly done with Fields. The moron threw for 2,200 yards... Come on. Don't care about line or receiver. Thats beyond horrible

Missing anyone?

Jimmy to Raiders imo. Sin city with the porn Star capital. His style of women.

Carr to Saints. Defiantly history with Carr and HC.

Seahawks draft Ricahsrdsom. Seems like their kind of guy.

Colts draft Shroud maybe or Tank for 2024. I’d Tank imo

Carolina Levi or Tank 2024

Jets just don’t see Rodgers accepting trade there not his style of culture.

Niners only they know the severity of Purdy n Lance and if issues. Imagine they sit tight if all good. If lynch doesn’t sign contract extension he may sell the farm for one last year and go after Rodgers

Really hard with certain teams no HC or OC in place. Regarding QB move. Petty is just to light imo. He seems likely to break in half. Shroud I think gets the draft buzz hype going 1st QB. Never trust a buckeyes QB imo. Richardson I cant trust and not into the Hurts style run heavy QB style trending.

I’m not sure the Bears can trade out of 1. No QB is worth the price this draft. Cards at 3 seem like the likely trade out.

I can see Texans and Bears both passing QB. If teams are debating between 3 guys then they have no guy. Way too much gotta get a QB shit and media and teams try and sell themselves on guys being better than are to justify the picks.

Colts typically don't go the black qb route.

Forgot about the Saints. Easy team to forget.

I like the draft. Will probably kick off with the Bears trading Fields to one of these teams. 2,200 yards passing in 2022 NFL where bad qb's throw for 3,500 yards routinely

  • Bears will trade Fields (he runs way way too much and gets hurt and his is a very poor pocket passer) if they can find a sucker and get a top 3 QB in the draft and also trade the #1 pick somehow
  • Bears will trade #1 for 3 picks or so, there are 12 teams than need a QB, some are desperate they have failed to get the team a good QB for a long time and the natives are restless
  • Indy will definitely go for a QB, probably thru the draft, maybe even trade up to get their man, the fans are not gonna be thrilled with Carr or Garoppolo though both could make them playoff worthy, much better than Ryan who was shot to hell physically and mentally
  • Levis will be a starting QB in 2024, and be one for 7-8 yrs, between Stoud and Young, one will be a bust, Richardson is the most likely to be a bust

Colts need to give Sam Ehlinger a full calendar year.... This is one of the worst qb drafts that I can remember. Just no franchisr qbs in the 1st 2 rounds based off mock drafts.

Young, Stroud, Hooker, Richardson have anout next to zero chance to be successful in the NFL.

Jimmy to Raiders makes sense. Not sure why SF is so in love with Lance...I would keep Jimmy, let him play and let Purdy heal and learn. (Rodgers is a dark horse here as I don't see him as a Jet)
Ehlinger has proven he is a poor man's Baker Mayfield and that ain't good...notice no Baker news for any team? Carr would not be an upgrade for Carolina other than the increased salary.
I think the Jets may be waiting out the Lamar Jackson scenario.

Lamar Jackson career is basically over. Any team that signs him to a franchise qb level long term contract will be screwed bad.

Ehlinger probably isn't good but its a bad qb draft so coltsd pick up left tackle in this draft and try to get Drake Maye next year.

Something else, if you are a long term rebuild like the Texans... You could be drafting weapons and lineman now and if Arch Manning ends up being worth the hype ( hard to imagine him sucking) you draft him in 3 years and already have an offense set up.

If bears trade fields route is in play. They should trade pick 1 for first and fields to go with other trade capital 2024 and Tank this year.

Sets em up for 3 1st next year. Go for the trio...
QB Drake Unc
WR Harrison Osu
TE Powers UGA

Use this year sign FA and stock up some young OL DL. Gets some experience. Have the most cap space any team sign few good defense guys. Roll out a putrid Offense for the easy Tank job

I like Texans skip QB. Grab Defensive this year. Tank again bad offense and go for QB next year

Lamar is not the guy. Ppl have been against that style for years. It doesn’t work. But media sucks him off and it’s racist to trash a black QB.

There is a new era of RPO QB play in league. Teams abandon the pass way more this year. Just not a good fit to win SB with run heavy QBs play.

Lamar to Jets I can see it. Truly feel Ravens knew what they were doing offering the contract. Good chess move. Knowing he be greedy turning it down. Now they have an escape with less media circus to let him walk. Jets Raiders Texans darkhourse possible teams imo.

Niners are committed to lance but doesn’t mean they may not make a deal for Rodgers. They invested so much in lance and no pride to walk away like most teams do. Jimmy to Sb sell the farm for lance with a win now team two years ago. Could have added pieces and QB shouldn’t have been it

Ehlinger holds the ball longer than anyone I've ever seen. He is afraid to throw it. No chance to succeed like that.

Idk Richardson screams Seattle. Edge kid from Texas Tech then Richardson seems like typical Seattle picks. Always thought Seattle drafts horrible rds 1 but clean up later rounds

Geno played well but no way I could move forward with him on the money he probably wants now. People hate Carr but I think he could be good fit. Sea chicken got a nice draft haul this year to make noise on picks.

Carter DT could fall to 5. Or Murphy at 5. Birds have good capital to stock up a young team

Horrible in the first round...

Cross might be the best recently
I could see them trading this years first for someones first pick + next year .
C.J. Stroud and Ohio st QB's..Eleven Ohio State quarterbacks have made it to the NFL with a combined 79-99-1 career records as starters.
Not a fan of Ohio st QBs

Yep horrible first round. They always trade back which isn’t horrible. Felt like each year they traded back with Green Bay like 3 straight years. Brooks was great pick imo. I was really high on him though. Cross n Lucas may turn into two good bookends.

If you saw recently in some threads about QB’s. You utter the same words as me. I mentioned couple times Ohio st QBs are automatic no draft for me. Just that simple, off the board no consideration at all. Along with left handed QBs. Haven’t seen a Bama Qb I’d draft in 20 years. May as well add Bama to the list

They have draft capital to get a QB move up. Stroud May fall to them never know. I’d just keep hammering picks. Nice young potential on that team.
